The sensor detects whether the seat belt buckle is latched or unlatched, allowing the passenger safety system to enable or disable the functionality of air bags, electronic park brake and the unbuckled warning system. Additionally, the sensor detects the tension of the seat belt, allowing the passenger safety system to enable, disable or adjust the deployment of air bags.
