PCA9551 LED闪烁器可在I²C总线和SMBus应用中闪烁LED,而在这些应用中有必要限制总线流量或释放I²C总线主机(MCU、MPU、DSP、芯片组等)定时器。该器件的独特之处是集成内部振荡器,提供两种可编程闪烁速率。若要使用普通的I/O扩展器(如PCF8574或PCA9554)闪烁LED,则总线主机必须发送重复命令,开启和关闭LED。这可极大地增加I²C总线上的流量,并耗尽主机的其中一个定时器。而PCA9551 LED闪烁器仅需初始设置命令便可编程闪烁速率1和闪烁速率2(如频率和占空比),用于各独立输出。在此之后,只需总线主机发出一条命令,便可开启或关闭各开漏输出,或者在闪烁速率1或闪烁速率2之间循环切换。最大输出吸电流为每位25 mA,以及每封装100 mA。

任何未用于控制LED的位都可用作通用并行输入/输出(GPIO)扩展。

低电平有效硬件复位针脚(RESET)和上电复位(POR)可将寄存器初始化为它们的默认状态(全零),使位变为高电平(LED关闭)。

PCA9551上的3个硬件地址针脚允许在一条总线上运行8个器件。

较新的超快速模式(Fm+) PCA9634 8位LED控制器为每个通道提供独立的PWM调光控制,以获得更佳的色彩混合能力;而全局PWM用于同时对所有通道进行调光或闪烁。共有126种可能的地址组合,并且最大输出吸电流为每位25 mA、每封装200 mA。
