PCA9538A是一款低电压8位通用输入/输出(GPIO)扩展器，带有适用于I²C总线/SMBus应用的中断和复位。在保持互连最小化的同时需要额外的I/O时，NXP I/O扩展器提供简易的解决方案，例如，ACPI电源开关、传感器、按钮、LED、风扇控制等。
除提供灵活的GPIO设置外，1.65 V至5.5 V的宽范围VDD允许PCA9538A连接电源电平不断下降以实现节能的下一代微处理器和微控制器。
PCA9538A包含四个8位配置、输入、输出和极性反转寄存器的PCA9538A寄存器组。

当任何输入状态与其对应的输入端口寄存器状态不同时，会激活PCA9538A开漏中断(INT)输出并用于通知系统主器件输入状态已改变。
INT可连接至微控制器的中断输入。通过在此线路上发送中断信号，远程I/O可通知微控制器其端口上是否存在输入数据而无需通过I²C总线通信。因此，PCA9538A可依旧是简易的从器件。
器件输出具有25 mA的灌电流能力，可在消耗低器件电流的同时直接驱动LED。
上电复位会将寄存器设为其默认值并初始化器件状态机。在PCA9538A中，RESET引脚会引发相同的复位/默认I/O输入配置而无需使器件断电，保持寄存器和I²C总线状态机为其默认状态直至RESET输入再次变为高电平。此输入需要上拉至VDD。
两个硬件引脚(A0、A1)选择固定的I²总线地址，因而允许最多四个器件共享相同的²C总线/SMBus。
