EVLSTCOMET-MET1:STCOMET Smart Meter Reference Design

The EVLSTCOMET-MET1 is a complete single-phase non-isolated meter with PLC communication, exploiting the performance capability of the full-feature STCOMET10 device. The meter has been designed on a cost effective two-layer 10 x 10 cm PCB.

The STCOMET10 is a system-on-chip integrating a flexible power line communication (PLC) modem with a fully embedded analog front-end (AFE) and a line driver, a high performance 3-channel metrology function and a Cortex®-M4F application core.

The meter design includes the following sections: a PLC transformerless coupling circuit, single-phase metrology, power supply based on the VIPER38LE, line breaker driver, LCD / buttons user interface.

The PLC transformerless line coupling is designed to allow the STCOMET device transmitting and receiving on the AC mains line using any narrow-band PLC modulation (single carrier or OFDM). The circuit is optimized for use in the CENELEC A band, mainly for automatic meter reading (AMR) applications. A few modifications would allow exploiting the STCOMET platform capability for PLC communication up to 500 kHz.

The metrology section is measuring the line current using a shunt, the neutral current using a current transformer (for anti-tampering), as well as the line neutral voltage.

A line breaker interface managed by the ST L2293Q device allows controlling a unipolar or bipolar relay. Two anti-tampering inputs are also available.

The buck configuration of the VIPER38LE allows reducing the cost of the AC to DC power supply by using an inductor instead of a transformer. This power supply, including the 5 V and 3.3 V DC-DC converters, is targeting the lowest cost but still ensuring a good performance. While complying with EMI requirements, the power supply is required to create as low interference as possible in the CENELEC A band where the PLC communication takes place. This ensures PLC operations to run with high sensitivity.

A cost effective glass LCD is driven by the STCOMET integrated CPU through 36 GPIOs. Two LEDs for energy measurements and two menu buttons complete the meter interface.
