An LF antenna driver device for passive entry/go (PEG) systems. It can drive up to eight low-frequency antennas (coils) to provide a wake-up and initialization channel to the key fob. Each driver is programmable up to a peak current of 1A (independent of battery voltage) and adjustable in 18 steps.

ATAN0101: PCB Design Guide PCB design for the Atmel® ATA5291 requires careful PCB component, trace and plane placement to achieve performance levels specified in the data sheet. Both the LF drive and power supply/voltage booster section of the Atmel ATA5291 must operate in a low-noise environment with excellent isolation. This application note provides details for successful PCB design implementation. (file size=802K)

ATAN0123: LCO Calibration The LCO in the Atmel® ATA5291 serves as the reference frequency source for the operation of the device in both immobilizer and PEPS mode. The accuracy of this oscillator is essential for ensuring precise protocol timing and carrier frequency generation. There are typically several tuned circuits employed in a typical application and accurate carrier frequency ensures optimum coupling results. The oscillator's uncorrected frequency is specified to a tolerance of 0.5% and this application note describes a method for enhancing this tolerance accuracy further to approximately 0.1%. (file size=197K)

ATAN0118: PEPS Operation This document provides a guideline on how to use the Atmel® ATA5291 as a transmitter for PEPS wake-up messages and continuous wave transmission for LF RSSI measurements. (file size=350K)

ATAN0125: PEPS Multiplexed Coils (>4) The Atmel® ATA5291 has the ability to control up to eight low-frequency antennas (i.e., coils) by taking advantage of the integrated multiplexer “External PEPS RLS Driver” and adding external switches (i.e., NMOS transistor devices). This document explains how this is done. (file size=164K)

ATAN0120: Coil Diagnostics The Atmel ATA5291 stands out for its many protection and diagnostic functions designed to protect against various failures. There are two sets of diagnostic features included in the Atmel ATA5291. One set of diagnostic features is enabled automatically when the Atmel ATA5291 is set to operating mode. If a fault occurs on the driver pins, the Atmel ATA5291 rapidly protects itself to avoid any damage and the failure can be read out from the fault registers. This feature is called instant electrical protection. The other set of diagnostic features is supported by a special Diagnostic Mode. In this mode, the coil-line drivers are switched to high impedance. Only the diagnostic blocks at every coil connection are active and they can be used to test the status of the lines. This feature allows detection of various faults on the pins. Because this diagnostic feature is used mostly for maintenance purposes, it is referred to as “Maintenance Diagnostics.” This document describe these two sets of diagnostic features in detail. (file size=352K)

ATAN0119: Booster Considerations One of the main parts of the Atmel ATA5291 is the boost converter and antenna current regulation for handling dynamic behavior. This note provides hints and discusses factors to help better understand the boost converter circuitry and alignment with the Atmel ATA5291. (file size=1,417K)

ATAN0117: Immobilizer Operation The immobilizer is used to authenticate the engine start procedure in conventional cars. In newer systems the authentication is done via the PEPS (Passive Entry/Passive Start) system. The immobilizer is then used primarily to ensure car access and engine start authentication as a backup when the PEPS system is out of operation, for example, in case the key battery has run low. Atmel ATA5291 provides a 1 channel immobilizer with 290mAp output current. This application note provides advice and details needed for getting an immobilizer system with the Atmel ATA5291 running. (file size=1,196K)

ATAN0121: Thermal Considerations The Atmel® ATA5291 can drive four LF antennas with internal drivers and can also drive eight channels with extended return line switches. Each channel can deliver 1Ap current driving capability. This document helps explain the thermal issues which must be taken into consideration for the Atmel ATA5291. (file size=933K)
